They're a pair that reunited after breaking up a few years ago. Their age difference (she's 15 and he's 24) is even greater than McLaughlin and Brubaker's!

Very happy for Alissa! I hope she can hold on to the top spot...or at least skate a strong long. I haven't had a chance to watch any of it because my feed was being screwy last night. Also good for Caroline! Even though third doesn't equal a spot to worlds this year, it would be a good finish for Caroline. I hope Mirai can pull up some.

PostSubject: Re: U.S. Nationals 2009   U.S. Nationals 2009 EmptySat Jan 24, 2009 9:42 am

The men's short is going on now and the big names have all skated already. Evan Lysacek and Jeremy Abbott were the first two skaters to take the ice. Icenetwork froze on me so I haven't seen anyone since Adam Rippon (who skated 4th). There was a withdrawal unfortunately. Scott Smith pulled out before his turn due to injury. Sad

Top 10 so far:
1. Jeremy Abbott (yay! cheers I'm seriously rooting for Jeremy to win this.)
2. Evan Lysacek
3. Parker Pennington
4. Johnny Weir (he popped his triple axel and lacked energy according to someone on Evan's fan board)
5. Stephen Carriere
6. Shaun Rogers
7. Jason Wong
8. Adam Rippon
9. William Brewster
10. Tommy Steenberg

Looks like Jeremy and Evan will be battling for the title...only 3 points separates them. Johnny is almost 16 points behind Jeremy and about 13 points behind Evan so he'll be fighting for bronze unless one of the aforementioned two has a meltdown a la Tomas Verner at last year's worlds.

Thank you Swandie! Very Happy

These are the results at the end of SP:
1 Jeremy Abbott, 86.40
2 Evan Lysacek, 83.59
3 Parker Pennington, 76.17
4 Brandon Mroz, 74.88
5 Ryan Bradley, 74.05
6 Curran Oi, 72.76
7 Johnny Weir, 70.76
8 Stephen Carriere, 69.36
9 Dennis Phan, 69.11
10 Shaun Rogers, 64.13
11 Jason Wong, 63.40
12 Adam Rippon, 62.22
...

Too bad for Johnny but also for Stephen Carriere... Shocked

Thanks glorydave. This has definitely been the nationals of the unknowns (well not in dance). Jeremy and Evan are in a class by themselves but it is tight in 3-5. 6th and 7th are very close to third right now. It will be interesting to see if Parker Pennington can hold onto third.

Today at 3, the pairs free and the free dance will be on TV so I shouldn't have any problems watching it. The ladies free is later tonight. Men's free is tomorrow (very excited to watch that!).

Pairs Final Results-Top 12:
1. McLaughlin and Brubaker
2. Denney and Barrett
3. Inoue and Baldwin
4. Evora and Ladwig
5. Catile and Okolski
6. Katz and Lynch
7. Yankowskas and Coughlin
8. Vise and Trent
9. Lepzinski and Burgess
10. Paetsch and Meekins
11. Trombley and Ibarra
12. Davis and Merritt

McLaughlin and Brubaker won on the strength of their choreography and interpretation. Denney and Barrett were technically perfect but I felt their choreography was weak compared to M/B (and even I/B).

Dance Final Results:
1. Davis and White
2. Samuelson and Bates
3. Navarro and Bommentre
4. Hubbell and Hubbell
5. Matthews and Gislason
6. Summersett and Gilles
7. Pratt and Obzansky
8. Kriengkrairut and Guilietti-Schmitt
9. Maxwell and Traxler
10. Farrell and Fishpaw
11. Perino and Avila
12. Correy and Lorello
13. Ratko and Harris
14. Cyders and Krasniak

*Wester and Barantsev withdrew...not sure why.

They only showed the top 5 after the OD and Davis and White were simply amazing! I do wonder what would have happened had Belbin and Agosto been able to compete. NBC talked to Gennadi Karponosov (who was at nationals with Matthews and Gislason among others) and he said that they were back on the ice. Navarro and Bommentre skated really well but third doesn't equal a spot on the team this year unless B/A aren't ready.

Ladies Final Results-Top 12:
1. Alissa Cziny (cheers yay!)
2. Rachael Flatt
3. Caroline Zhang
4. Ashley Wagner
5. Mirai Nagasu
6. Katrina Hacker
7. Brittney Rizo
8. Angela Maxwell
9. Alexe Gilles
10. Laney Diggs
11. Kristine Musademba
12. Joelle Forte

I got to see all of these skaters on NBC. Alissa wasn't perfect but her PCS gave her the edge for the title which was well deserved in my opinion. Alissa was actually third in the free while Ashley Wagner won. Mirai...she was crying before she took the ice. She didn't look like she wanted to be there but she powered through. She even started smiling after she landed all her jumps. I was hoping Caroline would make the world team but she skated great and should be proud.

Men's Final Results-Top 12:
1. Jeremy Abbott (squee!)
2. Brandon Mroz (yay!)
3. Evan Lysacek
4. Ryan Bradley
5. Johnny Weir
6. Curran Oi
7. Adam Rippon
8. Parker Pennington
9. Stephen Carriere
10. Tommy Steenberg
11. Dennis Phan
12. Shaun Rogers

Jeremy didn't have the best performance but his program components (he got 80 for that) helped him to win the free by a very slight margin. Brandon Mroz was awesome! He landed the one clean quad tonight and it was spectacular. His jumps are gorgeous. Evan took a fall on the quad and then made some other jump mistakes. It's too bad. Ryan did a decent program but he had a few mistakes.

Johnny was kind of a disaster but the fresh new seniors didn't have the experience to overtake him.

I'm a little sad for Parker Pennington. I was rooting for him to skate well in the long.

This was really exciting to watch! I am so happy that Jeremy is national champion. Ever since Cup of China, I had a feeling that he would have a good year.

There's a possibility that Johnny could still be named to the world team but I personally think the top 3 should go (and that most likely will happen). Brandon deserves a spot after what he did tonight.

Poor girl.... Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad We Japanese also have to be blamed for this. Japanese media was chasing her as promising young US. Champion all the time when she visited Japan. I hope she can have a enough rest to heal her ankle.
It's a pitty Ashley Wagner couldn't make worlds this year. Because I came to like her speed and energy this year. Wink The coach change has worked good for her.

Pretty surprising silver medalist ! (Just the same as Euro!! Razz Razz ) I really want to see Mroz's performance! cyclops cyclops In addition to his ratified 4T, he got SlSt4 +0.57 GOE. Shocked

I'm really glad for Jeremy. He's had a terrific season, so this was well deserved. I'm a bit sad for Johny though. I really want him to make it to Worlds. (my friend is going to go beserk if he doesn't). I've only seen Mroz one time, and I didn't like him at all. Might have to change my mind if he goes to Worlds then. Anyway, congrats to all of the medalists!

Wow! I'm so glad for Jeremy Very Happy , but so sad for Johnny Shocked
Now, what happens to the worlds?
Maybe Johnny should not participate on the basis of these results, but 2009 World Championships are too important! First of all they are in USA and then they will decide the spots for Olympic Games. I believe that at the end, American federation will decide to send to the Worlds the athletes with more experience...
How many spots for USA at Worlds? 3?
Maybe Lysacek, Weir and Abbot.
Mroz could take part to 4CC...
I think it's a hard decision for US federation scratch
