SOFIA — World ice dancing champion Maxim Staviski has been ordered not to leave Bulgaria after being charged with causing a fatal car crash.
Staviski, who won the world title with Albena Denkova in Calgary in 2006 and retained it in Tokyo last March, faces up to 10 years in jail.
On a bridge near Burgas on Aug. 5, Staviski's black Hummer strayed into the opposite lane and crashed into a Honda Civic carrying four passengers. Petar Petrov, 24, was killed and the others were seriously injured. Petrov was to have been married Oct. 27. Instead, his funeral was held Aug. 8.
The Russian-born skater apparently was not questioned about the deadly crash until last Tuesday even though a test after the mishap showed Staviski had more than twice the legal driving limit of alcohol in his blood.
