| BTW, this is very off topic. I don't know if it's good to write this here in DTFF. It's about 2005 Japanese National Championships. This weekend I watched a TV program aired in order to draw people's attention to GPF. And I found AGAIN the misleading information in it. The media always uses it to make a comeptition dramatic and I found this kind of statements rahter often recently. (Japanese media's stupidity... ) Here is a quote from Golden Skate's article about Nobunari Oda and it is the same kind of incorrect information that I saw in the TV program. http://www.goldenskate.com/articles/2009/110209.shtml - Quote :
- "In December 2005, Oda was declared National Champion of Japan and was named to the Olympic Team"
I suppose you all know roughly what happened in Men's event of 2005 Japanese National Championships. Due to the error made by JSF's score calculating system, Nobu was once announced as a new Japanese Champion. But short afer the crown was removed from him and went to Dai-chan. I was happy with Dai-chan's win but also I was really really sorry for Nobu at that time. It was one of the most horrific experiences for him in his life. But unfortunately this statement is not correct. First, JSF didn't announce the Olympic team right after the men's event. Second, according to JSF selection criteria of Turin Olympics (based on the points each skater had earend through 04-05 and 05-06 season), Dai-chan would have been selected even if he had placed 2nd behind Nobu. Of course I don't know what JSF was thinking at the moment, but that's why Miki(6th in the JNC) was selected, not Yukari(4th) nor Yoshie Onda(5th). I know it's all the past. Maybe it's just a small thing. But everytime when I find this kind of mistake, it bothers me a little. I wonder how many figure skating fans know the right stroy and I'd like DTFF members to know the right story about the incident .... I'm sorry if I make you feel uncomfortable....

Me too sorry Nobunari had to go through that rather traumatizing experience. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. The positive thing is Nobunari is Japan's reigning champion I was thinking, maybe we could create a thread with Daisuke's career facts. Miyu's story would be the 1st one in the collection.

Do you mean the interview with ESPN in English, or the Japanese one? I have both, I can upload them to the video section if you want. But yes, they are both very cute. (Rewatching them, he seems so young compared to now!) About the 2005 Nationals controversy: if you're talking about the GPF preview show aired by TV Asahi on Sunday, I saw it too. I've watched quite a few TV programs about Nobunari this season as well, and many of them also talk about 2005 Nationals. The way that they describe it really is misleading -- I knew that the Olympics selection criteria was based on points acquired in 04-05 and 05-06 and that both Daisuke and Nobunari were very close in points before Nationals, but I didn't know the exact numbers or how many points were awarded to each placement, so I always assumed that whoever won Nationals would be sent to Torino (since that's how the media portrayed it). I only recently discovered that the point difference was big enough that Daisuke would've been selected as long as he finished second or higher. It's really annoying that the media keeps misleading people. From what I recall, it seems like they explained the selection of Miki over Yukari pretty explicitly (based on points), so I don't understand why they couldn't explain the points with the men clearly. Even leaving aside the points though, the fact is that Daisuke actually won the competition fairly, yet the judging error messed everything up -- it wasn't a big conspiracy or something (the way some media portray it, it seemed like one). At any rate, it's unfortunate that the media just won't let this issue die. I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of repeats about this between now and Nationals. I read an article today about "Oda and Takahashi's Battle of Destiny" (about the GPF), and not only did it mention 2005 Nationals, it mentioned the coaching change as well, so clearly the media is trying to create more drama between them to hype up the rivalry. It's ruining the feeling of friendly rivalry Daisuke and Nobunari used to have, which is a shame because I really liked how they seemed to have a genuine friendship and respect for each other. I remember there used to be fluffs about them supporting each other and doing fun things like singing karaoke, but now I suspect the media angle will just be drama and more drama.

| It's really sad for Daisuke and Nobunari and it's a shame. I didn't believe that the miss judgement was caused by manual count for jumps and computer's system errors. When Daisuke placed 2nd after behind Nobunari, I was so sad that I saw him crying for the first time at his interview in public. And I remember that Daisuke didn't smile to us and he looked so lonely on the top podium at his medal ceremony after it turned his place out as a nationals champion. When he was there, Daisuke said "I just blame myself. Because I couldn't get a big difference points enough to recognize me for everyone as a representative of Japan to Torino Olympic Games." Anyway, since Daisuke had a lot of experience, he is not what he used to be before 4 years ago. I'm so impressed that he is more positive and always moving ahead now no matter what the mass media says. _________________ GO DAISUKE!!
